When asked to take part of the #motherhoodexhibition launched by #mumsinbeirut to celebrate Mother’s Day I was supposed to fill in the blank:
I’m a mom and …
But instead my mind is what got blank!
Well I’m a mom and many things.
I’m a mom and a child
I’m a mom and extremely happy
I’m a mom and fulfilled
I’m a mom and paranoid
I’m a mom and at many times sad
I’m a mom and drained
I’m a mom and exhausted
I’m a mom and blessed
I’m a mom and loved
I’m a mom and thrilled
I’m a mom and devoted
I’m a mom and selfless
I’m a mom and protective
I’m a mom and, well the list can go on!
For the above describes any mother that really understands the responsibility at hand.
What really came to my mind but was too scared to say out loud is:
I’m a mom and SINGLE
That was not the adjective I thought would ever stand to describe me as a mother.
But well, truth is, I am.
Being the person I am, one that turns harsh facts into positive actions I decided to take on this word and make it a happy living.
There are millions of single moms out there struggling everyday,
Fighting to raise healthy happy kids.
But mostly they’re struggling to be understood and accepted as the strong soft women they truly are
Someone once told me:
“Being a single mom, You’re like the tree. You stand alone but strong”
That’s why i chose this to represent me visually today
In yoga, this is called the tree pose
And just like the tree I have to find my roots and let them grow strong in the ground
I shall let my branches be long and lean so that no matter how the winds blow I bend but never break
I’m a single mom which takes twice the strength, twice the love, and twice the effort
So Maybe we should be celebrated twice as much on this special day.
